SEVP’s CPT Update: What Employers Need to Do Now
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued two broadcast messages in August 2026 that tighten
access to Curricular Practical Training (CPT) — and companies employing CPT workers should take note now.
The Four-Part Test
SEVP is now holding CPT authorizations to a stricter standard. Training only qualifies when it is:
- Essential to completing the degree — its absence would make graduation impossible
- Required of every student in the major, not optional
- Tied to a required course, not an elective
- Directly related to the student’s major, not a minor or general area of interest
Schools that fail this test risk losing their SEVP certification entirely, which would bar them from enrolling any
international students.
The Impact on Employers
This update is prompting universities to pause or suspend CPT applications while they review their curricula. This
means current CPT employees could face sudden gaps in work authorization if their sponsoring school halts
approvals.
Next Steps for Employers
Companies sponsoring CPT workers should act now:
- Audit your current CPT workforce and confirm each employee’s sponsoring school status on CPT reviews
- Ensure every CPT arrangement is backed by a signed cooperative agreement specifying the training’s
curricular relevance and structure - Identify backup visa pathways for employees whose CPT could be suspended or denied under the new
standard
The practical impact: Employers facing this issue should consult with immigration counsel immediately if they are
unsure of their CPT employees’ employment status. Contact Gunn Menefee LLC at (502) 236-9900.
